Pfizer's new deal with generic drug makers could cut the price of a few blockbuster drugs, including the cholesterol-lowering drug Nexium and its blockbuster drug Crestor. AstraZeneca, the world's biggest drugmaker, and New York-based drug giant Eli Lilly have agreed to cut their prices.

Pfizer has agreed to pay $7 billion in settlements, most of which will pay as much as 90 percent of the drug's price. The rest of the drug's price, which the company says is too high to be covered by insurance, will be paid by generic drug maker GlaxoSmithKline. The final deal would include $1 billion in rebates and discounts, Pfizer said. But drugmakers would have to pay at least a $2 billion fine and a $5 billion civil fine for each dollar in the settlement.

The deal is the latest step in a major effort by Pfizer to block generic drugmakers from making big profits, which is expected to be more than triple the cost of Lipitor, the drug it made in the United States. Lipitor is also the first to launch generic versions of cholesterol drug Zocor, a rival drug, which had been pulled from the market two years ago. Pfizer said it would not comment on the agreement.

The settlement allows the drugmakers to make more profit by offering the drug at a discount. The settlement will also allow Pfizer to avoid paying big fines for those who don't pay, the company said.

The announcement comes weeks after a U. S. jury in a federal case over allegations that GlaxoSmithKline paid a doctor or patient money that he was given for conditions that he says he wasn't aware he had. Glaxo had paid doctors for using doctors' names to diagnose liver failure. The company's maker, AstraZeneca, said that's part of its agreement.

Glaxo's $8.4 billion settlement with Teva has enabled the pharmaceutical giant to stop making blockbuster drugs like Zoloft, Celebrex and Prozac. Pfizer said the company will now begin offering generic versions of its cholesterol drug Crestor. Crestor, which has a much higher price tag, has been the world's No. 2 drug since it was launched in the United States in 1998. It is the first drug to win approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

The company said the agreement would give it a 180-day period of exclusivity from the Food and Drug Administration. But it said it is unlikely to have any impact on the company's other drugs. The company has yet to decide whether to launch a generic version of Crestor.

But Pfizer said the deal is not a legal one, and it is unlikely that the company will have any impact on Crestor. It has been sued over its sales of the drug in Canada and the United States. Prilosec and Nexium, which are both HIV protease inhibitors, are used to treat conditions such as ulcers, heart problems, and other problems that cause inflammation and pain.
